Powering Your Home

They’re always there at the touch of a button or flip of a switch: electricity and natural gas. But do you ever think about how that energy gets to your home?

Electricity is actually a secondary source of energy. It must be generated using either renewable (wind, water, etc.) or non-renewable energy sources (coal, natural gas, etc.).

Alliant Energy's generation division produces electricity at more than 30 power plants across the upper Midwest, with a total output of over 5,000 megawatts (MW) - enough to light 1.5 million homes.

There are more than 420,000 Alliant Energy natural gas customers in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

We’ve found a number of resources that can help you better understand energy’s route to your light switch or thermostat!
